Airplane passenger arrested after liquid cocaine found smuggled in bottles of alcohol

JAMAICA, N.Y. (PIX11) — A man is facing charges after officials with U.S. Customs say he smuggled liquid cocaine inside bottles of rum on a flight from Guyana to New York, according to a press release.

Wilton Sinclair arrived at John F. Kennedy International Airport on Nov. 17 off a flight from Georgetown, Guyana and presented his luggage for inspection.

CBP officers discovered four bottles of rum inside one of the bags, but noticed that the liquid appeared thicker than usual. The bottles were opened and officers detected an unusual chemical odor.

The liquid tested positive for cocaine, according to the release.

Sinclair, a citizen of the United States, was arrested for the importation of a controlled substance and was turned over to Homeland Security Investigations.

The total weight of cocaine found in the two bottles seized was approximately 18 pounds with an approximate street value of $310,000.
